Reference Desk & Reference Consultations

Students are advised to seek assistance at the Law Library reference desk if they have any questions or issues in the library. If a librarian is not available at the desk please speak to someone at the circulation desk or email one of the librarians to set up a research consultation.

Study Rooms - See Study Room Policy on the Library Information Page

Check out Materials

Students may check out most books for six weeks. Students may track their checked out books and renew them online using their library account. Students can access their library account at https://lall.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/loynolaw/ (ask at the circulation desk for your log-in information). Books located in the Reserve Collection at circulation may be checked out for a maximum of three hours.

If you need a book, article, or other resource that is not available in our library, you can request it via interlibrary loan. This service is available to currently-enrolled students, faculty, and staff.

Some professors make their past exams available electronically, while others are available only in print. (Note that some professors may not provide the Library with any of their old exams.)  The Library maintains an index of exams showing the professors, courses available, and format of the available exams; this index is available at the circulation desk on the first floor of the library.

Past Exams

You may access all of the electronically available exams at this link and can browse by professor or course name; you must use your Loyola email accounts to access these files in Google Drive.

Alumni Services

Library Access: Loyola Law alumni are welcome to use the law library collection whenever it is open. Alumni may check out a study room except during Extended Finals Hours when group study rooms are for student use only. The use of the computer labs is not available to alumni as computer labs are restricted to current faculty, staff, and students. There are two public access terminals available near the 2nd-floor elevator.

Reference Services: Alumni are encouraged to take advantage of the Reference Librarians’ expertise by calling or stopping by the reference desk with research questions. Librarians can assist with formulating search strategies and finding relevant resources available in the library and online.

Borrowing Materials: Alumni may apply for a Loyola Law Alumni Library Card for no fee beginning January 1, 2015. The loan period and fine amounts for alumni borrowers are the same as those for students. Borrowers must agree to abide by all rules and regulations established by the library, must agree to pay for or replace any item issued to the borrower that is lost or damaged, and must agree to pay any and all overdue fines. The law library reserves the right to terminate the borrowing membership if the borrower does not abide by the rules and regulations established by the law library. Borrowers will receive a membership card. This card must be used to check-out books by alumni.

Online Databases: The library subscribes to numerous research databases that alumni are free to use while on campus. Examples of these on-campus use databases are HeinOnline, Fastcase, and Ebsco Legal Source. Certain databases are not available to alumni such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, or BloombergBNA because of the use terms of the database contract.

Printing and Photocopying in the Library: Alumni may use any of the Law Library’s photocopiers located in public areas. Copies are .05 a page which is charged via a “copy account”. Copy accounts may be established at the circulation desk.  Printing and the use of computers in the computer labs are only for current students and faculty.

Network Access: Please connect to the network “Loyola-Net”.

E-mail: Access to an alumni’s Loyola New Orleans e-mail account extends in perpetuity if used. Accounts are only reclaimed if a significant amount of time passes without the use of the e-mail function

Non-Alumni Attorney Membership Services

Borrowing Materials: Licensed attorneys may apply for a library card at the circulation desk. A library card for a non-alum costs $50 for a one-year membership. Attorneys must present their library card and a government-issued I.D. to check-out materials. Only the cardholder may checkout items, a clerk or assistant may not check out items for an attorney.
