About the Section
Student practitioners in the Youth Defense section defend youth accused of misdemeanor and felony-grade offenses in all phases of delinquency proceedings before local juvenile courts. Clinic students in this section learn the substantive law, procedure, and advocacy skills needed to advocate zealously for the expressed interests of their young clients by providing a high-quality, holistic defense. Students interested in careers as criminal or youth defense attorneys will benefit from this section as youth defenders must develop the trial skills and knowledge of criminal law and procedure needed for criminal defense as well as the specialized skills and knowledge of special procedures specific to the representation of youth in delinquency proceedings. As part of the section’s holistic approach, students may also have the opportunity to engage in collateral representation involving educational rights, mental health services, and other advocacy areas that have a bearing on outcomes in juvenile court. The section also exposes students to policy and systemic reform work on pressing issues related to youth justice.
