Understanding Steps to Externships

Step One: Research Externships

  • Study pre-approved Field Placement Opportunities on website

  • Attend Externship Informational Sessions/Meet with Heather Lambert, Externship Liaison

  • Read Externship Manual to understand the commitment

Step Two: Application Process

  • Apply for an externship opportunity

  • Schedule Internal Interview

  • After the Internal Interview discussion, applications are sent to particular Field Placement Offices (FPO) by the Externship Office

  • NOTE:  ONCE THE APPLICATION IS SENT TO AN FPO, THE STUDENT IS PRESUMED COMMITTED IF SELECTED BY THE OFFICE

  • Students should realize the importance of honoring commitment and preserving the working relationship between Loyola and each FPO.

  • Prepare for Interview with FPO

  • If a student is NOT selected by a FPO, the selection process will repeat with another office if the student agrees

  • NOTE: THE OFFICE OF LAW SKILLS AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING DOES NOT GUARANTEE PLACEMENTS

Step Three: Enrollment and Registration Process

  • Loyola will register you for the Externship Course

  • Congratulations! You are officially part of the externship program

  • You will receive an official letter from our office notifying you of the next steps
