Description of Field Work

The Orleans Parish Juvenile Court is dedicated to providing a court of excellence for children, youth and families by enforcing the Louisiana Children’s Code.

Externs are placed in a judge's chambers and will work exclusively with the judge and court staff. Externs will observe cases and research legal issues related to "cases that are brought in the areas of abuse and neglect, adoption, child support, delinquency, juvenile traffic offenses, terminations of parental rights, voluntary transfers of custody, voluntary surrenders, adult criminal court transfers and other miscellaneous matters." Students may also be able to research and observe issues related to human trafficking.

Externship Requirements
All students are encouraged to apply.

Course recommendations:
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience.  For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends students enroll in any of following courses either prior or during the same semester as enrolled in this externship:  Criminal Procedure, Child Rights, Criminal Seminar, Law and Poverty.

Application Process
