This class will provide an overview of a commercial real estate transaction, and will cover the negotiation of the purchase agreement, financing the purchase through recourse and non-recourse debt, conducting real estate due diligence, and handling the closing. The instructors will also do a mock negotiation of a real estate purchase agreement between a buyer and seller. Thursday, October 22nd (12:30p.m. to 1:45p.m) (LS - 111)
The Scholarly Writing Series is a three-part skills class designed over the course of three months to help students achieve their writing goals. The Series begins with a topic development class to assist students in their transition from persuasive writing to scholarly writing and understand the importance of topic selection. The next class is designed to assist students with research and the last class allows student to present their idea and brainstorm with a group of colleagues. Students must attend all three in order to earn a skills credit.

This is an opportunity to set time aside on a Friday and hear from Career Development, Skills and Gillis Long about what employers look for in a resume. The first part of the course is dedicated to building vocabulary as a foundation to your resume. The second part of the course is a workshop where you will construct, draft, craft each portion of your resume so that you walk out with a newly improved document ready for the externship, internship and hiring season. The last part of the class is an interactive hypothetical course prompting discussion on interviewing issues.
SKL-102415: Environmental Compliance

Being an environmental lawyer means more than simply knowing environmental vocabulary. Many students do not know exactly what they will do in the future or for whom. Will you represent an agency, a company, a non-profit, an indigent or a business person? How will you adapt and react quickly depending upon the varying perspectives? This skills class focuses on a few representative types of prominent environmental law issues - agency jurisdiction, wetlands, enforcement, reporting and due diligence. The course will focus on short lectures mixed with student environmental law problem-solving to include ethics and litigation. Students will work in groups to solve various environmental hypotheticals and then discuss differing strategies. The course instructor has been practicing law for over 45 years. His practice extends to the entire panoply of air, water, and waste regulation, including compliance counseling and defense before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ), and courts. His practice also includes endangered species and wetland regulation, dealing with the EPA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the LDEQ, the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (LDNR), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His government contracts work includes small business issues, bid protests, contract dispute claims, and negotiations of equitable adjustments. This is a skills class offered in conjunction with the Independent Police Monitor's office fostering police mediation training in our community. Transformative Mediation is based on the principles of empowerment of both participants and the recognition of the other participant's values (what's important to them), feelings, and topics (things they would like to make a plan about). Students will learn skills such as active listening, managing differences, understanding facilitative and transformative mediation, and recognizing the complexity in a mediation process. *This class satisfies the required Negotiation skills course (applicable to the 2L class).
SKL-103015: Trial Drill Skills
Friday, October 30th (9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m) (LS - 112)
This course is offered in coordination with the Trial Advocacy Student Group. The Trial Ad team have asked local trial practitioners to participate in this hands on trial skills course. The first half of the course is dedicated to teaching trial drills in short segments to include direct and cross examiniation techniques. The second part of the class is dedicated to introducing evidence and formulating objections. This class is designed to provide time and space to practice and observe trial skills while practitioners guide students in smaller format.
