Description of Field Work
LCCR is a nonprofit law office that defends young people in Louisiana’s juvenile justice system through both direct representation and policy advocacy. LCCR serves as the juvenile public defender office for Orleans Parish. Legal Externs at LCCR assist attorneys in all aspects of litigation defending juveniles in delinquency proceedings in keeping with the organization's mission of providing holistic, skilled, and client-directed representation. Duties include including performing legal research, conducting factual investigation, drafting of memoranda and motions, analyzing discovery materials, preparing briefs, assisting with dispositional and community reentry advocacy and planning.
Externs are required to abide by LCCR's confidentiality policy, and to act at all times in furtherance of the stated interest of LCCR's clients. Students may also assist in representation of juvenile clients in collateral areas impacting delinquency proceedings such as advocacy in the areas of school discipline, housing, government benefits and the mental health system. Externs will also be able to participate in LCCR's state and local juvenile justice reform efforts aimed at reducing juvenile incarceration and increasing opportunities for rehabilitation through developmentally-appropriate community-based services. This placement provides many opportunities to observe juvenile court proceedings, engage in client interaction, and develop a deeper understanding of both the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
Term-Time Externships: Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials (cover letter, resume, writing sample, unofficial transcript) to the placement.
Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
Summer Externships: Students should apply directly with the placement organization following the instructions available at http://www.laccr.org/who-we-are/employment-internships-volunteering. Students are encouraged to speak with Prof. Linares before applying, and students who receive an offer should contact Prof. Linares as soon as possible to convert the position to an externship for academic credit. LCCR begins accepting applications for summer law clerk positions in the fall on a rolling basis, but all positions are generally filled by early spring. Apply early!
