Description of Field Work

The Orleans Parish Juvenile Court is dedicated to providing a court of excellence for children, youth and families by enforcing the Louisiana Children’s Code. Our mission is to work collaboratively and innovatively for the rehabilitation and support of children and families in our community.

Externs have the opportunity to work closely with all sectors of the court and will be supervised by the Court Attorneys. Externs will observe cases and research legal and social issues related to the areas of juvenile justice. Externships will be tailored to the student’s interests. Topics may include: juvenile detention alternatives, abuse and neglect, adoption, delinquency, juvenile traffic offenses, terminations of parental rights, voluntary transfers of custody, voluntary surrenders, adult criminal court transfers, drug court, human trafficking, data sharing, legislation, judicial administration, grant writing, funding development, education, mental health, community resources, advocacy, etc.

Externship Requirements
All students are encouraged to apply.

Course recommendations:
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience.  For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends students enroll in any of following courses either prior or during the same semester as enrolled in this externship: Criminal Procedure, Child Rights, Criminal Seminar, Law and Poverty.

Application Process

Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at halinare@loyno.edu to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.

Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
