Description of Field Work
Appleseed is a national organization dedicated to the belief that all people should be treated with fairness and justice. Part of Appleseed’s mission is to “provide genuine opportunities for all–through excellent public education, access to public and private institutions on fair terms, and diverse, healthy neighborhoods.” Appleseed is able to effectuate change through persuasion and using effective evidence-based advocacy. The non-profit organization tackles tough societal problems by research and writing handbooks, proposing legislative solutions and presenting the case for resolution.
Students assigned to Appleseed should expect a high degree of mentoring from Field Placement Supervisors. As an extern, assignments will include research and writing on a wide variety of legal issues encompassing systemic issues in our community. Students interested in long-term policy solutions and sustainable change will experience the holistic approach Appleseed attorneys pursue in order to effectuate change. This externship requires a high degree of interaction and personal skills including networking with local attorneys.
Strong legal research and writing skills. Preference for students in the top 20% but all students are welcomed to apply.
Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.
Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
