Description of Field Work

Headquartered in New Orleans, the 8th Coast Guard District is responsible for U.S. Coast Guard operations spanning 26 states, including the Gulf of Mexico coastline from Florida to Mexico, the adjacent offshore waters and outer continental shelf, as well as the inland waterways of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee River systems.

Externs will be involved with substantive legal work and will be supervised by a practicing attorney.  Externs may work in all Coast Guard practice areas, including criminal law/military justice, operations, international activities, civil advocacy, claims and litigation, internal organizational law, contract law, environmental law, regulations and administrative law, legislative support and legal assistance.

Externship Requirements
All students are encouraged to apply.  Note: If selected, this office requires a background check and students must ensure they are cleared to extern before the date the externship is set to begin.

Application Process

Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at halinare@loyno.edu to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships.  Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials (cover letter, resume, writing sample, unofficial transcript, letter of recommendation) to the placement.

Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
