Description of Field Work
"The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. It is also illegal to discriminate against a person because the person complained about discrimination, filed a charge of discrimination, or participated in an employment discrimination investigation or lawsuit" Students interested in employment law, human resources, gender discrimination or civil rights may be interested in pursuing this externship. The extern works closely with the director who provides a direct mentoring experience. Externs will receive assignments from the direction to include investigating claims or researching an area of law. As an extern's skill level increases, the director will challenge the extern to evaluate and analyze the filed evidence. Externs may also experience practical drafting assignemnts.
The New Orleans Field Office welcomes highly motivated law students with an interest in equal employment opportunity to participate in a Student Extern Program. Based on the number of hours available and the level of knowledge regarding employment law/regulations, this program can be tailored to meet the capabilities of the individual volunteer.
Externs will be expected to perform or participate in a wide-range of professional duties. Students may be called upon to assist the administrative judges as well in the development of cases for hearings. Externs are encouraged to engage in supervised conciliations which will enhance their negotiations skills.
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience. For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends students enroll in any of following courses the same semester as enrolled in this externship: Gender Discrimination, Employment Discrimination, Administrative Law, Mediation & Arbitration, Constitutional Law Seminar: Race and Law.
Apply in early January through early April for a summer placement.
