An extern in this experience is mentored by a staff attorney and will receive research and writing assignments specific to issues relevant to assist the court.
Field work in the past has included:
using the law library, Lexis, and Westlaw to research code articles, revised statutes, and case law relevant to applications for supervisory writ;
determining the relevant legal and/or factual issue(s) in the writ applications;
establishing whether the case law cited in the applications for supervisory writ is on point and has been interpreted correctly;
ensuring the proper standard of review is utilized when making recommendations concerning the writ applications;
analyzing relevant cases to the issues and facts in each writ application to determine the correct recommendation;
preparing legal memos to assist staff attorneys in drafting supervisory writ application recommendations for the court.
Rising 3L students in the top 20% of their class with an interest in civil law are encouraged to apply.
