Field Placement Description
Externs conduct legal research and writing to support the office specifically with Board Hearings in lawyer discipline matters. This externship allows students to learn the rules of ethical and professional conduct in a 'real life' context.  This placement provides a unique opportunity to further develop research and writing skills and observe lawyer discipline hearings and oral argument.  Externs are placed in the Board’s office located in Metairie, Louisiana. Some travel to hearings in other locations is available. 

Externship Requirements
Students interested in legal research and writing and lawyer discipline matters are encouraged to apply. 3L students are preferred. Externs in this placement must commit to a minimum of 2 credits with enrollment in the externship course for 3 credits preferred.

Course recommendations: 
Students interested in this placement should have already taken Lawyering III (Professional Responsibility) or be prepared to take it concurrently during the semester of placement.

Application Process

Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at halinare@loyno.edu to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships.  Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.

Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
