Library Policies

Cell Phones

Cellphone use can be annoying to other patrons. Please limit their use to the Circulation area on the first floor, and to the horseshoe shaped area by the Administrative offices on the second floor. Do not use them on the third floor: it is reserved for silent study.

Food & Drink

Please help us by complying with the Law Library food and drink policy. You may drink beverages from spill-proof containers anywhere in the Law Library. Covered containers such as those from Starbucks do not qualify. We will be giving a spill-proof mug to all first-year students as well as returning upperclass students. Ask about your mug at the Circulation and Reserve Desk.

There should be no food on the second or third floors of the Law Library. In the first floor reading room, you may consume non-microwavable vending machine snacks such as potato chips, corn chips, and candy. Please dispose of wrappers appropriately.

Please cooperate with this food and drink policy. It is designed to protect the Law Library from an invasion of little creatures that not only feed on any leftovers but on paper, bindings, and glue in books. It will also serve to protect the new furniture from any inadvertent spills.

Interlibrary Loan

Students may request materials which are unavailable in the Law Library from other libraries through interlibrary loan. Designated forms are located at the Circulation Desk.

Most libraries will lend monographs, but not serials. The lender will mail a photocopy of any journal article.

The Law Library will attempt to borrow materials from libraries that do not charge. Hence, most interlibrary loans are free of charge. However, some items may only be acquired from an institution that does charge a fee; in that event, the student may have to pay any fee involved. The Law Library will discuss options with a student prior to requesting such an item.

Usually, materials will arrive between ten days and two weeks after they have been requested. Why is there a delay? After a library agrees to lend a book, they must process the order and then send it through the mail. Students will be notified when materials arrive.

Materials may be kept, on average, for three weeks. The lending period is set by the lending institution, not by this Law Library. Delays in returning materials can cause this Law Library to lose its borrowing privileges; therefore, if a patron keeps materials past the due date, the patron can lose interlibrary loan privileges. A patron may request a renewal any time prior to the due date.

Noise

Talking is permitted on the first floor of the library. On the second floor, please keep voices low, as students are trying to study. The third floor is reserved for silent study.
