Description of Field Work
The Judiciary Commission of Louisiana was created in 1968 by a Constitutional amendment. The members of the Judiciary Commission serve as an extension of the eyes and ears of the Justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court and act as independent “fact finders” to conduct inquires and investigations into alleged violations of the ethical rules for state judicial officers. The Commission will determine whether to recommend to the Supreme Court that a judicial officer be disciplined. When considering the Judiciary Commission’s recommendation, the Louisiana Supreme Court receives and reviews a written report and a record of the proceedings before the Commission and listens to the oral arguments.
An extern would assist Ms. Legier in conducting research, compiling reports and preparing for hearings. This work is highly confidential. Students would develop research and writing skills and a better understanding of Louisiana procedure, especially the administrative arm of the Louisiana Supreme Court. Students would be able to observe oral arguments at the Supreme Court.
All students are encouraged to apply. Strong research and writing skills preferred.
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience. For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends students enroll in Lawyering III or Louisiana Civil Procedure the same semester as enrolled in this externship.
Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.
Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
