budapestgroupCentral European Legal Systems in Transition (1 credit hour)

The course will focus on the historical backgrounds of the post-socialist legal systems of countries in Central Europe. The diminishing role of government in the economic sphere and the problems and opportunities of privatization, as well as harmonization and unification with legal systems and economies of the member states of the European Union will be explored.
The course seeks to convey an understanding of the changing nature and function of both public (constitutional) and private law in Central Europe.

International Sales Law (2 credit hours)

Time:  9:00 a.m. - 11:20 a.m.

Final Exam:  Saturday, June 12

The course will focus on the law governing the transnational sales of goods.  The class will first cover the major sources of international commercial law with a special emphasis on the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), the UNIDROIT Principles of Commercial Law and public international law regarding arbitration of commercial disputes.  The scope of the CISG along with its relationship to the domestic commercial laws of the United States and Hungary will then be examined.  The class will cover issues of offer and acceptance, express and implied warranties, performance obligations and remedies under the CISG.  The CISG will be compared to the domestic sales laws of the United States and Hungary throughout the class.
