Nannette Jolivette-Brown (Vickie Brown)

Nannette V. Jolivette Brown is an experienced environmental executive, attorney and mediator, including high conflict mediation training, with expertise solving problems, developing strategies, analyzing environmental issues, and forecasting business decisions in the government, oil, gas and utility industries. She has nearly 20 years experience leading and managing teams of attorneys and experts in winning complex environmental litigation averting exposure to millions of dollars in liability. She was most recently a Partner with Chaffe McCall, L.L.P., in New Orleans, focusing her practice in environmental law and regulation, toxic tort litigation and commercial litigation, in general. She defended corporations and governmental entities on hazardous and toxic sites and in other complex litigation matters, and insurers and their insureds in toxic tort cases. As a trained mediator, In the past year alone, she has mediated over 100 disputes. Currently she is a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor of Law in the Mediation Section of the Loyola College of Law, Law Clinic.

Ms. Jolivette Brown has represented clients before local, state and federal agencies on energy and environmental regulatory matters, specifically involving CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act issues. She has a diverse trial practice, representing oil and gas companies, chemical companies, classification societies and other commercial entities. She is lead trial attorney in litigation before state and federal courts in several jurisdictions and specifically in several precedent-setting environmental permit appeals in Louisiana.

She has worked in both the public and private sector. During 1994-1996 Ms. Jolivette Brown was Director of Sanitation and Environmental Beautification for the City of New Orleans and served as a member of the Mayor’s Executive Cabinet. Ms. Jolivette Brown is admitted to practice law before all courts both state and federal in the State of Louisiana and the United States Supreme Court.

Ms. Jolivette Brown has testified as an expert before local, state and federal agencies and commissions on environmental issues. She has been a speaker on environmental issues at national conferences. Her opinions on environmental issues have been published in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, New Orleans CityBusiness, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate, Gambit Weekly and Christian Science Digest. She has also published articles in the Federal Bar Journal and the Louisiana Bar Journal. Ms. Jolivette has received awards recognizing her contributions in preserving the environment.

She has represented parties in mediation for nearly 20 years and in the past year alone mediated over 100 disputes. She has taught Environmental Law in both the law school classroom and in Law School Clinical programs, Professional Responsibility, Civil Procedure and Evidence.

Ms. Jolivette Brown is a Fellow of the Louisiana Bar Foundation. She was voted the 2001-2002 most distinguished graduate by Tulane Law School’s Black Law Student Association (“BLSA”) Chapter. Ms. Jolivette Brown was elected and re-elected to the House of Delegates of the Louisiana State Bar Association (“LSBA”). She is an active member of the Minority Involvement Section of the LSBA. She is a member of the LSBA’s Quality of Life Committee and specifically the Subcommittee on Bar Admissions. She is a member of the American Bar Association (“ABA”) and its Litigation Section, and the ABA’s Energy Industry Restructuring, Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions Committee. She is on the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Association (“FBA”), was Editor of The FBA newsletter, The Advocate and Chairs the Committee to Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Powell v. Alabama. She is a member of the Energy Law Institute and Maritime Law Association of the United States. She is a Hearing Office with the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board.

Ms. Jolivette Brown graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (B.S., 1985, cum laude) and Tulane Law School (J.D., 1988; LL.M. 1998, Energy and Environment). She was a law clerk to Honorable Veronica Wicker, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. As a law professor Ms. Jolivette Brown has taught Toxic Torts and Environmental Law, Environmental Justice, Federal Civil Procedure, Sales and Leases, Conflicts of Law and Professional Responsibility at Southern University Law Center (1998-2000). She was also an Environmental Law Teaching Fellow at Tulane Law School (1992-1994). Currently she is a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor of Law in the Loyola College of Law Mediation Section of the Law Clinic.
