Description of Field Work
Many attorneys refer to the Orleans Parish Criminal Courthouse as "Tulane and Broad" as the court is located at this intersection. This courthouse tries more cases than any other court in the city, so at any time during the week students may be able to observe various aspects of trial work. This court only handles criminal matters and externs are placed in chambers with a district judge. The opportunties in chambers may include review of filings before the court and observing various court proceedings. For students interested in criminal law, this experience will help develop a better understanding of procedure and the chronology of a criminal case. Students will assist the law clerk or judge on the many tasks before the court and each experience various depending upon the docket. This is a fast pace environment and students need to be prepared to be self-directed learners and take initiative to learn in context. This is a great experience to observe and learn trial tactics while earning academic credit and learning in context.
All students interested in criminal law and criminal procedure are encouraged to apply.
Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at email@example.com to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.
Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
