Field Placement Description
The City Attorney is responsible for directing and supervising the legal affairs of the City of New Orleans. The City Charter defines the duties of the City Attorney as follows:

  • To provide legal advice to the Mayor, the Council, and other city offices, departments and boards;

  • To take charge of all legal matters in which the City has an interest or is a party;

  • To prepare proposed ordinances upon request of the Mayor or City Councilmembers; and

  • To review all City contracts, documents and instruments creating any legal obligation affecting the City.

Course recommendations: 
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience.  For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends  students enroll in any of following courses the same semester as enrolled in this externship: Louisiana Civil Procedure.

Application Process

Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at to schedule an appointment and fill out the Externship Application on the Externship Program website. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will have to submit the following materials to Prof. Linares: 

1. Resume

2. Signed cover letter 

3. Authorization to Release Educational Records

4. Certificate of Disciplinary & Good Character Form

Students will also need to pass a criminal background check before being hired.

Cover letters should contain a subject heading designating it as an Externship Application and be addressed to:

Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
