Description of Field Work
CAP encourages current law school students to apply for Fall and Spring externships. An externship with the Capital Appeals Project demands rigorous attention to detail and creative thinking. CAP offers students a closely supervised opportunity to learn about death penalty litigation while providing a much needed service in the local community. Externs assist staff attorneys and investigators on active cases. The workload includes legal research and writing, issue-spotting, obtaining and digesting records, gathering statistical data, and participating in team meetings and strategy sessions. These opportunities provide excellent experience.  Externs will understand the complexity of issues particularly scarcity in resources dedicated to advocacy in this area.

Externship Requirements
Students with a dedicated interest in criminal defense are encouraged to apply.  Applicants interested in any of the opportunities below should send a resume, a cover letter detailing their interest in capital defense work, a 5-10 page writing sample, a transcript, and a list of two or three references.

Course recommendations:
Students may want to "tether" a doctrinal upper level elective to this externship experience.  For a tethered experience, the Office of Skills and Experiential Learning recommends  students enroll in any of following courses the same semester as enrolled in this externship:  Constitutional Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law Seminar.

Application Process
Fall externship: Application Deadline (July 1st)
Spring externship: Application Deadline (November 1st)
Summer externship: Application Deadline (February 1st)
