Short Bio

Professor Gruning graduated Order of the Coif and magna cum laude from Tulane Law School, where he was articles editor of the law review. He practiced law with Stone, Pigman, Walther, Wittmann & Hutchinson in New Orleans, and joined the Loyola faculty in 1986. He has lectured abroad in France, Morocco and Madagascar, and he taught at the University of Montreal from 2001-2003, where he helped launch the graduate program in Anglo-American common law. He gave the Fresco Lectures at the University of Genoa on the limits of liability in tort law in May 2006. He is a member of the American Law Institute and serves on several committees of the Louisiana State Law Institute.

He teaches private and commercial law, as well as constitutional law. He has written in several areas, including persons, family, torts, obligations, and legal history. Current research interests include recodification of law, in particular the law of sale, and the comparison of legal systems with roots in the continental civil law and the English common law, including their constitutional foundations.
