U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Barbier, J.D. ‘70 is the recipient of the 2018 St. Ives Award, the highest honor awarded by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Alumni Association. Named for the patron saint of lawyers, the St. Ives Award has been awarded annually since 1995 to one College of Law alum who represents the highest standards of the profession, has volunteered service to the university and college, and has furthered the mission of the College of Law and Alumni Association in significant and meaningful ways. A renowned federal judge and longtime public servant, Judge Barbier has served on the Loyola Law Alumni Association for the past 18 years, as well as served as an adjunct faculty member for the law school.
A resident of New Orleans, he will be honored at the annual Law Alumni Reception and Luncheon to be held Friday, February 23, 2018. The event begins with an 11 a.m. reception at the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, 921 Canal St., New Orleans, La. 70112. The luncheon program begins at noon. Leila D’Aquin, J.D. ‘88, as president of the Loyola Law Alumni Board, will give the welcome. University president the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., will give the invocation and Dean and Judge Adrian G. Duplantier Distinguished Professor of Law Dean Madeleine Landrieu, J.D. ’87 will provide a report on the College of Law. At the event, Loyola will also recognize past alumni association president William “Billy” Gaudet, J.D. ’82, and receive a report from the nominating committee. Judge Barbier will be presented the St. Ives Award by Suzanne Scalise, J.D. ’03, Director of Bar Preparation and Learning Initiatives at Loyola.
“The St. Ives Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Alumni Association, and this year the association is pleased to honor Judge Barbier, who has given so much to the nation, the region, and Loyola,” said the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., university president.
“Through his service to Loyola, to the courts, to the legal profession, and to Louisiana, Judge Barbier has served as an important role model to Loyola law students and Loyola law alumni throughout the nation.
