NOLA Baby & Family Magazine interviewed Professor Cheryl Buchert for their article on “free-range parenting” in their October 2015 issue. The pop-culture term refers to the practice of allowing one’s children a measure of independence by allowing them to roam freely without supervision. Buchert is quoted as saying the once common practice could be a felony in Louisiana. State law defines a lack of supervision as criminal abandonment. Buchert added family law scholars have only recently begun to look into the legal ramifications for parents.
