Professor Andrea Armstrong to Become Auditor Under Prisoner Rape Elimination Act

The Department of Justice selected Professor Andrea Armstrong for training as a certified auditor under the Prisoner Rape Elimination Act.  Her selection follows a competitive application process and will take place during her upcoming sabbatical.  Armstrong will be the eighth Louisiana-based auditor and in the first independent auditor based in Louisiana certified by the Department of Justice.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 empowered the Department of Justice to develop national standards to prevent incidents of sexual violence in prison.  Those standards became effective on August 20, 2012.  Auditors endeavor to ensure those standards are followed by all confinement facilities covered under PREA standards, which must be audited at least every three years to be considered compliant.
