John Cummings, M.B.A./J.D. ’61, wrote a piece for the Washington Post titled The U.S. has 35,000 museums. Why is only one about slavery? Cummings opened the Whitney Plantation Museum in Wallace, LA last December, America’s first and only museum of slavery. The Whitney Plantation comprises 250 acres of land and was home to the Haydel family, one of the largest slaveholders in Louisiana. Cummings purchased the property in 1998 and has since spent over $7 million of his own money restoring it and establishing the museum.
