Field Placement Office
402 North Jefferson Avenue
Covington, LA 70433
Description of Field Work
Students will assist attorneys by conducting legal research and writing memorandum relevant to client cases. They will attend court with attorneys. Additionally, they will be encouraged to review client’s discovery and attend attorney strategy sessions. When possible, students will be encouraged to attend substantive pre-trial motions and trials. Opportunities for interviewing clients in a jail setting may be available depending upon interest and experience.
Summer and/or Semester externships are available. The number of hours and days that you work are flexible, but must be coordinated with your supervisor.
A strong interest in criminal law and criminal procedure is required. Students interested in criminal defense are especially encouraged to apply.
Any student interested in the Criminal Defense Clinic during their third year of law school should strongly consider applying for this position. Students may want to “tether” a doctrinal upper level elective to this internship experience. For a tethered experience, students should consider enrolling in Constitutional Criminal Procedure, Advanced Criminal Procedure, Louisiana Criminal Procedure, or a criminal law seminar.
Interested students should contact Prof. Linares at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an appointment. After speaking with Prof. Linares, students will be directed to fill out the Externship Application available at http://law.loyno.edu/externships. Once cleared by OSEL to apply, students will be given instructions on submitting application materials to the placement.
Loyola's application deadlines for each semester are posted on the homepage of the Externship Program website. However, students should apply early as students are accepted on a rolling basis and placements may be filled prior to the application deadline.
